Where AI Fits in the Energy Picture

AI's energy demands are significant, but not the largest driver of new consumption. According to 2024 projections from the International Energy Agency (IEA), which forecast through 2030, data centers rank fourth among major sources of new demand.

Projected New Electricity Demand by 2030

Industrial Growth+1,936 TWh
Electric Vehicles+838 TWh
Air Conditioning+651 TWh
Data Centers+530 TWh

One TWh (terawatt-hour) powers roughly 90,000 U.S. homes for a year.

This doesn't minimize AI's impact. Data centers are the fastest-growing category and the most geographically concentrated. But it provides perspective: the grid needs upgrading for many reasons, and AI is one of several forces driving that need.
